Flooring Ideas?

First idea is to use 3/4 inch plywood and "box" in there the joints come on the butting edges between the joist

maybe I am reading this wrong...but all the but ends of the plywood or OSB (T&G w/ glue is highly recommended) should break on top of a joist?

I'm a little confused here. Are we talking glue down vinyl flooring or ceramic tile? If it is ceramic tile, I thought the subflooring needed to be something like 1 1/4 inch thick to stop any deflection that would crack the tile.

If you really want to do the job right for ceramic tiles use Schluter Ditra.

2x6 floor joists on 16" center will deflect/bounce with 3/4" t&g or OSB or plywood. recommend that you mate another 2x6 to each existing joist. generous with the nails,liquid nails would help too.

Unless the span is very short, I agree 2x6 will deflect.

If you can take all the load off the floor by removing everything in the room, and if you have access to the bottom, consider adding a layer of 3/4 OSB or plywood on the bottom of the joists. Screwed and glued with liquid nails. Let this set up & dry for a couple of days before walking on the floor.

As far as the flooring goes, for vinyl, flexible stuff, they used 3/8 pressboard on top of our OSB subfloor in the kitchen and it has been very good. I would use this before I used luan.

Our floors are 3/4 OSB on 12" centers and have no bounce at all. Now we kept the BCI span to about half of the claimed amount and that helped a lot.
