Recently had to dig up an overgrown flower bed and only after the fact realized that we didn't try to save one of my favorite plants.
I want to replace it but don't know what it was. Blooms very late here in Zone 4/5 and is typically loaded with blossoms and honey bees well into late Fall. All I can find is this close-up but it's probably 2-3 feet tall.

Seems all agree - its an Aster of some kind. Your bees are lucky to have a blooming plant. I'm feeding the bees along with the humming birds, here.
