Fluid for backhoe with PTO pump?

I would consider replacing the existing with what you use in the tractor, assuming it is compatible. That is what we did on my dad's pto pump backhoe. One less type of fluid to keep around - or accidently get put into the wrong equipment.

Coyote, sorry for the confusion. The 5 1/2 gallons was in reference to what I was going to need to do a full fluid change (IOW, the capacity is 5.5 gal).

My intent with the original question was to find out if it mattered what fluid I added to top off for the time being. The fluid level was just a little low, it needed maybe a pint or so. I just wasn't sure how much it mattered to mix since I didn't know what was in there.

I was asking because I do value my machine, and even though it seemed unlikely to harm it by adding such a small amount of a different fluid, I thought I'd best ask.

OK, got it. If it's only that low, (a pint or so) I'd just use it until the dig is done then change it out completely. I'd warm up the backhoe prior to draining it to have the best flow of gunk and to allow for the max amount of fluid out of the tank.

if you don't know what's in there.. why not repalce it with some new ut.

i have a woods 6500 hoe. I got it at auction, draine dthe old, good looking oil, and put in new, for piece of mind.

I use dthe 24$ / 5 gallon accell 303 fluid from tractor supply. same oil I use in many seperate sump hyd systems.

Consult the builder? The OP quotes the operator's manual. He even stated the published recommendations in his first post. He can't go wrong by folllowing them. I can't imagine what advise could possible be better.

Sorry my post upset you so much. For one thing, I never have heard of an "SAE Hydraulic Transmission Fluid", or at least heard that label or name put on it, especially by a manufacturer. I assume it means a "tractor hydraulic oil", or "universal tarctor hydraulic fluid", which is usually a 10W/30 viscosity product, whereas a type "A" or type "F" ATF would be closer to an SAE 10 Grade, somewhat different. This pump obviousely is tolerant of various viscosities. I'll mind my own business in the future. I didn't think I advised to go contrary to the operators manual.

That would be my guess as well.. IE.. it's calling out a generic multi purpose oil like a UTF fluid.

between that and the ATF oils it specified, I imagine it's hard to go wrong with anything from 10w-30w type base oils.. I'm running a economy UTF in my 6500... accell 303 fluid..
