Morning folks. I need to hang some 8ft, two tube strip lights over a garage door with no clearance,14 ft blg with a 12x16 foot door real near the rafters.I guess my question is , has anyone ever seen brackets that would attach to the ends of the fixtures so I can mount them above the trusses?.I've been looking and haven't seen any so far. Heck, I don't even know if they exist.
Anyone here ever have to do this and what did you use to mount them above the bottom trusses and door.

Could you hang them on chain from the top truss member?

How about a 2x 4 across top of trusses so you can screw fixture to the 2 x 4. If you still need height, you can shim 2 x 4 on top of truss to whatever height you need.

If you have room on the sidewall, how about mounting there. Mounting above the door path would obscure the lighting when the doors are open.
I have the same issue with my doors. 1" of clearance when raising the door, with the lights mounted on the side just under the door rails I have plenty of light with the doors open or closed.

(originally I had the lights mounted to the joist starting from the end of the rails to the back of the shop. Always had shadow problems near the doors. The first light was actually just inside the "door zone" of the rails but was never a problem until I tightened the springs for my then young son, who had difficulty lifting the doors. After I tightened them I asked Him to give it a try.
As the door came up He let go and it went all the way to the end of the rails, smacking the light. the lamps fell to the floor and exploded. Man was He impressed:eek:)

"Could you hang them on chain from the top truss member?" Hadn't thought of that,l good idea Groundcover. Only problem is I won't go up that high, 14ft is really pushing it for me now.

dqdave1, thanks for the reply, but i'm having trouble picturing what you mean.

Firedog, another good idea, thanks might use as a last resort.Do you have any pictures?.

How do you like that 300DTC? I have had one for about 3 years and have no complaints so far.

I've got several 4 ft fixtures in my garage and they always give me trouble on cold weather and high humidity. They are frustrating to fix, can't ever tell weather it's the ballast or the bulb or a bad connection, I'm replacing them with compact flourecents. You might be able to mount those in the truss pocket to the side of the truss.
Just a suggestion
best of luck

This will work just fine. I will add my thoughts.

You want to put in two recessed lights? Cut two 2x4's to fit within the truss spacing and secure them. Space them according to the length of the light fixture plus an inch or so.

Long florescent fixtures typically need four screws with fender washers to fasten them to an overhead surface. Put your screws in an area about six inches to a foot from the ends but definately in an area where you have easy access.

With your fastener spacing defined, take two more 2x4's the length of the truss spacing plus 3 inches. Lay those over the drywall and secure them to the top of the trusses. You now have a boxed in area for your lights along with a finished surface above it.

If the 3.5" box is not adequate depth wise, use 2x6's for boxing the trussing in. rip a couple of strips to lay over the top of the trusses so you have a flat enclosed box in the end.

Make sense?
