Flying Squirrel

   / Flying Squirrel #31
We have lots here in Florida. Since they are nocturnal, most people only see regular (grey) squirrels. I have had them in my trees stand at night. The are extremely fast, make a peep like vocalization frequently, and have red eye shine. A big one is 4" long here. They are small animals, but even grey squirrels are smaller here then in the northern part of the country
I have seen owls catch them and I've seen Owls try and miss. I suspect they are a regular part of a Barred owls diet, mostly because they are so abundant. In some areas they are more abundant then grey squirrels. I often see them on Cabbage palms, I suspect they spend the day up in the fronds and eat cabbage berries among other things. I have heard that they are predatory, but I'm not sure what they would kill other then insects.

We have the feathertail glider possums here. Same size as a mouse. Cute little things. Trouble is the owls chase them.

No squirrels in Australia.

We had one hanging around the oak tree our deck surrounds. I haven't seen him in a while.
