Good evening gents, I am looking for a source for ring gear for my s370D. The original one got son-in-lawed. No teeth left for about three inches. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Could you not rotate the flywheel or even the ring to avoid the missing/damaged teeth?
That is if you can't get a new one.

There aren't any teeth left. I pulled the inspection cover to check the condition of the gear to see if I could just flip it. When the kid breaks something he does it all the way. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thanks, I'll check them out.

You may have to build them up with weld and then file or grind back to tooth shape. Be careful as welding on the gear may cause it to expand and come off the flywheel. Then again you may have to take it off the flywheel to weld it up. Just an idea to keep in mind. Bryce

What method do you recommend for that mig/tig/arc? Will the gear warp or should I preheat and post heat for stress relief? I've not tried to weld on a ring gear before. If I can't find one I may just have to do that. Its been an outstanding machine for it's small size and there is no funding for a replacement tractor at this time. Thanks for the suggestion.

It very likely will warp if you get it too hot. Even if you can rebuild the teeth, it will need to go to a machine shop that can spin balance it. If it is warped or otherwise out of balance any at all, it will lead to premature main bearing failure on the engine.

Working far a "major" airline (Delta) maintaining the ground equip I had occasion to repair many flywheels using a stick welder and later a mig welder. I would cut/smooth the existing welds with a die grinder to remove the bad ring. Reweld the new ringstarting with a 'tack' moving around the circle similar to tightening head bolts, then going behind and adding more metal until I had about 3/4" of weld,. Use the previous weld spots as a guide. I seem to remember there were six? weld points. I never had any problems with warping or balance -- Of course this was on equipment and not a race car, etc, which is what we are talking about here - a low rpm engine.

When I'm unsure if a repair will work I try to take a look at it from the point that it is already broke, so the only thing I can lose is some time and effort and you always gain some experience and knowledge in trying. Sometimes repairs turn out better than you think, sometimes it's not even close. In this case, whether it warps, the teeth turn out incorrect, etc. it will be no worse than what you have as far as its functionality. If you do get to the point where the repair appears successful I would research how it should be heat treated. If the teeth get annealed in the process they might not last long as would be the case if they become embrittled.
