followup question for concrete driveway over ditch

Do you have a time limit to get the concret poured? Are they requireing you to pour it right away?

The reason I ask is that it would be better for you to wait as long as possible to pour due to settleing of the fill dirt.

Usually you will have to have a certain slope off the main road your connecting your drive way to. Put down your fill dirt to a point about 8 inches below this point.

Then fill the rest with 4 inches of road base rock.

Which brings up the next question. What will you use for base material under your concrete drive? If it's sand, then wait awhile to drive over the dirt fill.

ALso be sure to put the fill dirt down in layers and drive over it as much as possible. The front tires with a load of dirt do a pretty good job of compacting your dirt while you build it up.

The concrete drive part of your project should really be a seperate project all together, and best done in the spring when the weather is better.

My practical time limit is the spring rain. I need to do this before the ditch becomes full of water.

Fill dirt is sand. DOT inspector says vegetation-free sand will be okay. I will ask him how long I can keep the driveway without concrete cover. Thanks for the suggestions.

I read the Create An Entrance thread. You did get a deal for the culvert. The best quote I got for 18" D mitered-end culvert is $600.

Since your using sand for your fill material, that changes everything I said earlier.

Sand is the only materilal that self compacts. No need to let it settle or do anything fancy with it. I love sand for driveways and building pads!!!

Just put the sand down to your desired height, bag drag with the bucket and build your forms. Be sure to get the sand to the exact height you need it. Sand is allot cheaper than Cement, so don't leave low spots tha you'lll use to fill later.

Sand is fine for driving on, but you might as well pour the concrete right away and get it over with.

1* 15'' plastic culvert would be a lot easier to handle than concrete or steel.I added 110 feet of it to my driveway culvert this fall .Worked out great and was easy to use .
