I bought a 5 quart jug of Rotella T1 straight 30 W dino oil. .... was going to use it in some of my old gasoline engines. I did not notice that the jug said "For Diesel Engines"...Wouldn't that work just as well in my old gasoline engines?

Thanks Y'all.

It has different additives in it to handle the byproducts of burning diesel. Oil for gas engines has a different additive mix than for diesel engines. There are some Rotella versions that can be used for both because they have the additives for both but if it says diesel only then I wouldn't use it in a gas engine.

Main difference between diesel and gas oil is different or more detergent to dissolve the extra soot from a diesel. Can use them back and forth. Just need to change oil quicker in a diesel with gas engine oil. No problems with diesel oil in a gas engine.

Rotella T1 carries the CF-2 rating for the Detroit Diesel engines (2 stroke).
Probably the most common application for this oil.
For non emission gasoline engines, this would be a fantastic choice.

You guys are great. Thanks........I think I'll switch to a synthetic at the next oil/filter change on the old 18 HP L&G tractor.....even though I don't run some of these engines in the winter. So now I'm satisfied that there is no great harm done and using one brand/weight does appeal to me...e.g. 10W-30 full synthetic in my truck and in all the other engines....snowblower...sprayer...chipper....push lawnmower....Cyclone Rake....trash Pump....Power washer etc.

I use Rot T dino and full syn. Both show listings for Compression and Spark engines on the container. Go for it. As others have said, just more crud to clean up with diesel soot so more detergent and your oil may get dirtier (initially) cleaning up your engine if you never ran C oil in it.

Case in point on cleaning your engine. I just bought a 30 year old tractor with 900 actual hours......do the math. Also somebody must have removed the thermostat (haven't looked yet) as it is slow to warm up....not heavily loaded, just running in the driveway.....maybe not....we'll see as one is on order.

When I got the tractor, first thing was to change the oil. After draining I took a swab and swabbed the bottom of the oil pan looking for the extent of sludge. Found maybe a 1/16" but it was there. Did the oil and filter and sat it outside and ran it at PTO rpms for about an hour. Yepper, oil was already showing discoloration. I'll leave it in for a bit, work it some haying this summer and redo the oil and filter this fall. This time when I check the sump for sludge it should be gone.
