The other thing to keep in mind is the power level. Diesels in pickups in the late 90's were around or below 200hp. Our 2006 Cummins was 310hp, and most 2007+ diesels are closer to 350hp. All that hp makes for quick acceleration but burns a lot of fuel in the process.

The diesel tractors still are effecient because of no EPA or Gov regulations.

Not so anymore. Common rail 22,000 psi injection is in new tractors today.

I traded in my 2004 dodge hemi for the same reason. I was getting 10-12 miles per gallon with the same gear ratio 4.10 and a 34 gallon tank. I have an 06 3500 Diesel with 4.10 s 34 gallon tank and get 480 -550 miles depending on how much highway I do and how heavy my foot is. I have 20000 miles on the truck right now and would not trade for a gasser. Just my 2 cents.:D
