I got two words for young people today: 401K and IRA! Don't depend on your company! Don't depend on SSN!

FWIW.

Most younger people I know, don't talk Pension plans, it is all about cash and options now.

Boeing just gutted their used-to-be-awesome retirement plan. Now, after a certain year (don't know when, don't care) you're on you're own.

I like the third option of Income Property... sure it is a job but it is also an alternative funding plan for retirement.

At one time the rule of thumb was 5 rentals to fund a retirement... one of my elderly friends had been a widow for 40 years... her husband told her to keep the old victorian they owned and it will take care of her in retirement... she lived upstairs and downstairs there were 3 small units... and she loved being a landlady and her tenants were very good at looking after her... by the way... she was a local celebrity because she still drove the 1930 Model A Coupe she and her husband bought in the 1930's.... I was her mechanic...

I do think college is over rated as opposed to education which is not... Also, many colleges indoctrinate... at least they do here in California. Being exposed to different views is educational if that is all that is to it. I know young people that are doing really well... also the first from their families to go to college... in one couple... her family is from the Philippines and she is a Nurse and her husband's family is African American and he is a Police Officer... in their mid to late 20's and making over 200k plus benefits most of us can only imagine. My point is they both went to college with a purpose... not to find themselves. They both are on track as far as retirement... he will be able to retire with full benefits at age 54...

I'm not saying it doesn't happen but in my part if the country I don't see it paying. Took the wife 3years after graduation of working a minimum wage job for school system to get a teachers position. Was looked at many times and said we want experience. You don't have any. She would have made more at Walmart than the school system those years. My job requires an 8th grade education. Maybe full high school. I don't use what I learned in college and my degree is in Ag. Heck if high school would prepare the kids for the real world and not some ****ing test we would all be better off. These kids could come out and make a living.

This seems to be getting pretty "off topic" and I'm going to start a separate thread.

Although being retired I do enjoy complaining about things.

Well, I think about this subject a lot. Wha' do I enjoy most about retirement. Even though I'm 65 going on 66 (soon!), I'm not fully retired, but being self employed, I can and must go at my own pace. That's due to physical issues. So, I guess my forced favorite thing is that I can nurse my pains! Not fun. But at least retirement allows a person to not to have to push anymore. I simply canno' push. So, y'all younger boys, think about ye health and remember, it really is the most important thing ye have.

yeh ,,, those aches and pains accumulate over the years ( and some come on all of a sudden ) ... grumble grumble grumble ....
health can go down hill quickly ( as a lot of us have found out ) ....

a lot has to do with genes ( and stupidity of course ) ...

so enjoy life a bit before you retire , don't wait for it "later" ...
plan for your "golden" years , but don't count on anything for sure ( life makes its own twists and turns )

if it works out ---- Great ! ... but in all likely hood it won't ....

those stock options may turn out to be nice wall paper for your house ...
companies fold , close , go bankrupt ( and so does your retirement plan )...

the old blue chip portfolio becomes worthless when the banks and sure fire low risk companies go T up ...
and everything you've worked for goes Phissst over night ....

nothing but your health is left and your abilities ... ( and your sense of humor )

Seems the large Utilities and the Public Safty Employees still have very solid retirement packages... as do those connected with the Universities around here.

Everyone I know that has retired with a Pension loves being retired... as long as they have their health and the health of the their loved ones...

Many also retired in their mid 50's and some now are in their 90's... so 40 years and way more years than spent on the job...

A very large group that I'm a part of are very active in the Model A and Model T clubs... they take 3 week trips traveling the country, Canada and few even the world... something that simply couldn't happen with the constraints of a day to day job...

The side of my family that farms never really retire... they just slow down and very much help the next generation... there is always something to do on a farm... even in his 90's my Grandfather would spend the winter in his shop making sure all the equipment was in good repair for the coming Spring and making repairs... if he ran out of things to do... there was always firewood to gather, split and stack...
