For those who remember WWII and the aircaft

I've been on the Lexington, the Alabama and the Yorktown which is in Charleston, SC. I spent the night on the Yorktown with my son on a school field trip. It was neat having the whole ship to just a few people.

The Yorktown and the Lexington are not in their WWII configurations, not even the same ships actually. Are there any of the WWII flattops intact? Isn't the Midway in NYC?

Edit: Nope, Midway is in San Diego and not in WWII configuration.

I haven't checked it out but I think all of the fleet carriers in commission were converted to the angled deck to facilitate launch and recovery at the same time.

I was on the USS Carl Vinson many years ago and we went to play in the 50 year victory over Japan day... deck launched about 15 WWII aircraft that we carried onboard from Alameda CA. It was like slow motion watching them get airborne... Then we would shoot a few F-18's off the catapults... really neat to stand on the flight deck and watch!

I think everything went angledeck. As jets got bigger, they also needed bigger Cats. That is why USS-Hornet decommisioned so long before USS-Lexington; the Lex had been upgraded to Cats that could move a lot more weight. USS-Hornet just couldn't launch the heavy planes.
