Ford 1100 , Front wheels don't turn

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and need help with a used ford 1100 that I bought. The front driveshaft is missing so I know that is a problem of course but the spindle coming out of the front differential just free turns when you move it. Does anyone know what is broken in the front differential that would cause this to act like this. I looked online and parts are hard to come by for this tractor it is a 1981. I noticed one of the parts suppliers had a differential gear and the gear and shaft it engages for sale for 566 dollars that seems like a lot of money, does anyone know where I could find parts for this tractor also? You can check 'tractor junk yards' for parts. It sounds like your pinion gear has the teeth sheared off of it. The ring and pinion gears are normally sold as a set though. Although it there is a slight possibility that the bolts could have sheared off that hold the ring gear.

Either way you need parts, and I would use new parts if I was going to fix it.

the parts are expensive. You can easily spend more for for parts to fix it than the tractor is worth. I would use it as a 2wd tractor.

Thanks everyone for your help. I just bought this tractor two weeks ago from a dealer, he didn't realize that the four wheel drive didn't work either until when we were loading it up on the trailer. I traveled five hours with a trailer so he knocked money off the price and I decided to buy it since I drove so far. I will have to decide if I want to repair the four wheel drive. It has a front end loader and everything else works so I guess I will just deal with it for awhile. I paid $3000 for the tractor that seems like a fair price I suppose. Larry

Wow that's too bad about the 4WD. My 1100 would be a completely different tractor without it. I don't know if it makes a bigger difference since its such a small tractor. I just know I wouldn't get near as much done without 4WD. Got mine last year with a bunch of implements. Seems like one solid , well made tractor. Might be a good investment to fix it.

First off, you need to take the front end apart to see exactly what the problem is. Never know, several TBN members have opened their front diffs on various machines just to find sheared ring gear bolts and no other real damage. Every tractor owner needs a service manual for whatever may happen--If you don't have a service manual, get one and if you can't find or afford one, you may already know, but you can look at online parts diagrams like Messicks New Holland. West Kentucky Tractor Parts shows they have at least one 1100 parts machine in stock so you can check with them or one of the other salvage yards as mentioned. Have to say, $3K for a machine w/ FEL isn't a bad price but buying from a "dealer" that doesn't realize the 4WD doesn't work until you have made part of a 10hr trip doesn't speak well of them even at that price.....I'd ask for some parts price assistance if it turns out to be a ring and pinion if their "selling price discount" didn't cover parts and labor to repair the problem.
