Ford 1100 Tie Rods

Hi all, I am brand new here. I have a Ford 1100 4wd, and I have purchased boots for the steering tie rod ends, as the old ones had deterioted. Can anyone help me understand how the cap comes off of the ball fitting? I have taken the castle nut and cotter pin off already, but I don't want to damage the joint. Thanks!

Strike the side of area where the tie rod passes through the spindle with a big hammer. This is the piece the castle nut comes in contact with. I wish I could give you a better discription. Hopefully someone has a pic.

I believe hooked is tellng you to strike the 'socket' the pin of the tie rods passes thru.

I like to back up the socket on one side with a large hamemr.. then use a couple pound maul on the other side.. 180' off to hit the joint.. this plastically deforms the metal and usually pops the pin up.

other way to do it is to use a pickle fork.. drive the fork betwen the socket and tie rod end.. since you are replacing the boot.. this is the easy way .. it destroys the old boot.. but no biggie.

harber freight has pickle forks for 3.99$..( napa, 20$ ) i bought 2 nearly 10ys ago from HF.. still have both of them.. have done a dozen tractors with them..
