Because I cant do anything right the first time I have to split the tractor again. Of course I put new oil in it. Is there any way to do this without draining all the oil back out?

well... if you clean the drain bung area, and have clean pails, you can drain the oil and refill.. I might run it thru a paint strainer in case a fleck of gunk flies into it.

I don't often catch and refill.. but have done as you have and had to redrain a sump just after working on it.

Yeah I'd try to capture it in clean (perhaps new) containers then filter it on the way back in....I've had to do that too...i've also poured 4 quarts of oil straight through an engine by leaving out the drain plug...now that's embarrassing.

I did almost as bad when changing my motor oil in lawn mower, forgot to put back the drain plug and put about a quart of full synthetic on the ground.
I would thoroughly clean a drain pan or use the bucket that you just took the oil out of as a catch basin. No reason not to catch and reuse it as long as you clean up the underside to make sure no clumps of dirt fall in the container.
