I have a 1210 ford that started knocking last weekend. It seemed to be bogging down like a brake was hung up just before the knocking occurred. I backed off on the throttle as quick as possible and the knocking got softer. I shut the engine off right away after this. Does this sound like a rod bearing? After a few minutes I tried to start it up again and it cranked hard. After about a half hour it seemed to crank OK but I was reluctant to actually start it for fear of doing more damage! My next step is to pull the motor and remove the pan and check the bearings. Can anybody offer any suggestions? Also I do have oil pressure

If this is a gas job,
Sure sounds like the engine was on the verge of seizing because of overheating. If thats the case you may need pistons because the rings will be jammed in the lands. The knocking is probably wrist pin related so rods may be needed too if the bushing is integral.
Usually when they get hot enough to seize then the oil pressure goes away too but will come back when it cools down.
If my assumptions are correct about the overheating you have some work ahead of you.

If this is a diesel,
may only be a bad injector spray pattern due to some fuel or fuel component related reason.

All the best,
Martin

For the worst case, take a look at this thread.
1200 w/ half pwr & clang
I hope you don't have to follow this path because the parts to resolve it were not available.
