I have a Ford 1215 with a Ford 7106 f

ront loader. I need to replace the seals on the bucket cylinders, but I can't figure out how to get the piston out. I saw one description that identified a small hole above the lock nut, but I can't figure out what to do from there. It said something about driving the threaded piece of the cylinder into the cylinder to access some kind of release pin or something, but it wasn't detailed enough to make sense to me. I tried to use a drift to drive the nut and threads, but couldn't budge it.

Pretty sure this is the cylinder you have. I can't tell from the picture. You may have the other style that the hex is part of the gland.
If it is the first style, the nut is threaded onto the gland that is pictured here. I think, if you turn the nut and look in the hole or poke a nail in it, you will feel a depression/hole that you would put a very hard, solid rod in to hold the gland while unscrewing the nut. In the picture of the gland, the arrow is pointing to the groove that will line up with the hole in the cylinder. You most likely need to heat up the gland nut as it doesn't look like it will come off easily.

I greatly appreciate your engagement.

I assume the gland is the piece with the threads on it. If so, then the gland nut itself comes off relatively easily. But I don't know what to do once I have the nut off. I saw the diagram of the cylinder which is great, but the function of the nut is unclear to me. In any case, once I get that nut off how do I get the whole gland, complete with seals out of the cylinder? As I mentioned, I tried loosening the gland not to expose some of the threads between the cylinder and the gland nut and driving it back further into the cylinder without success. Obviously, I need to get it out eventually, not in.

Also, the diagram indicates a nut and seals further up inside the cylinder. I'm guessing that is a part of the whole piston and will come out once I get the first part out?

Here are some excerpts from some others that have a 7108, but similar cylinders:


“On the 7108 Bucket Cylinder it will be necessary
to drill a hole as shown in the inset, Figure 19. The
dimensions of the hole are:
Diameter - 3/16"
Depth - 9/16"
From end of barrel
After drilling the hole insert a punch in the hole to prevent the gland assembly from turning and remove nut,
2. Use a punch to drive the cylinder head (7), down
into the cylinder barrel to obtain access to the snap ring. Be careful not to damage the cylinder rod.”

Follow up post to that one:

“My loader cylinders are like that, but the lock ring came off for me without the gland assembly spinning.
The snap ring is thick wire and stubborn, and really difficult to get out between the rod and bore.
Patience and perseverance, it will happen.”

"Use a punch to drive the cylinder head (7), down into the cylinder barrel to obtain access to the snap ring.” okay, maybe I'm just being dense, but I don't understand how driving the threaded gland back into the cylinder barrel will give me access to a snap ring. And I have done everything but put a piece of dynamite against the gland nut and gland to try to drive that in to the cylinder and it hasn't moved. I guess I've got nothing to lose if I damage the piston since the whole hydraulic cylinder is of little value to me without being able to replace the seals. But I still don't understand what driving it back into the cylinder will do to help me get it out. Assuming I do get the gland pushed back into the cylinder, what's my next step?

Oh, and if I'm able to drive the gland back into the cylinder, how do I get anything out of the cylinder? I'll have nothing to hold on to.

IF you can drive the gland down into the cylinder, there is a snap ring that will have to be pried out. Not saying any of this is easy.
Once the snap ring is out, you pull the rod, piston and gland out of the cylinder.

Try some heat at the end of the cylinder around the gland.

The light has dawned! The snap ring is on the inside of the cylinder barrel! Okay. Now I have to figure out how to drive that gland back past the snap ring without damaging either the gland threads or the piston. Wish me luck!
