Ford 1300 tractor problems

Ok this all started by my brother using ether on it. It has the shibuaru 2cyl diesel engine. The ether use caused the piston to break at the relief points just above the wrist pin. I did an inframe rebuild consisting of pistons rings and rod bearings. I didnt have to mess with the timing or anything else. I got it to fire up and run but it sounds like a midget is beating it with a sledge hammer and when i throttle up its not real smooth. It is firing on both cylinders but has a loud sharp knock. Anyone have any ideas for me.

How long did you run it for? I used ether on my Ford/Shibaura and it sounded like what you're describing, but only for a short time then it went away.

Nothing on mine broke, and I see you had yours apart since you used the ether, so I don't really know.

If you didn't see anything else in the top end when you were in there then maybe the lower Or maybe something easy like bad injector.

Did you check the rods to see if they were bent from the either. Did you make sure you got the right replacement piston and bearings.

I think I would have had the crank spun and dial indicated as I understand this is a weak point in their power plant. Either can really put some strain on the components. I don't think this noise will go away by itself.... especially if it is a metallic sound. Good luck.

I think the likelihood of damage to connecting rod is high if the piston gets damaged as you described. Small damage to the rod may be hard to detect just by visual inspection. Did you change crankshaft friction bearing? There might be some play there after ether explosive force. IMHO use of ether is absoloutley asking for trouble. Were the push rods (four) perfectly straight and undamaged when you put it together?
