How do you check for proper oil level in the rear axle? My understanding is this is the same oil used to drive the 3 point hitch lift arms. The reason I want to check it is that the lift is working very slowly. It will drop fast but seems to labor lifting the load of the snow blower which is not very heavy. It was working fine a few days ago.

Rear axle and diffy is the reservoir for the hyd fluid. Unlike front axle (provided you have FWA) the rear axle does not have a oil level check. You would make sure you have adequate oil in your transmission (gear) and that would also be good for both rear axle and hydraulic. 9 out of 10 times if lift arm labors would be due to lift piston seal damage that is quite simple and inexpensive to change. There is outside chance of pump or lift spool valve problems that is more remote possibility.

Transmission / rear axle / hydraulic system dipstick is located in the transmission cover directly behind the steering column and in front of the seat. Fill cap is in the rear of the 3PT hitch cover below the tool box ans to the side of the toplink mount.
When did you last change the filter (s)?
