1979 Ford 1700, 2001 L3010 Kubota
Hi

I've been mostly over in the Kubota forums, and in the general stuff - I recognize a lot of you blue guys' online names from other places. I got an interesting phone call yesterday. One of the guys I work with saw a tractor on the way home, and he knows the owner, who is a truck mechanic at the company I work for.

I went over, and it's a 1979 (checked serial number) Ford 1700, with what looks to be the 770 loader (is that model number right?). A lot of you guys probably know these specs, but it's a Shibaura 77.6 cu. in. (28hp/23PTO), 2cyl diesel, 4wd, manual steering unit, with the 3x4 trans (12F/4R). The PTO is transmission driven, not even a 2-stage clutch. There's 1400 hours on the clock, probably at lower than the specified 2245 RPM for 540 PTO speed, so it's actually more hours. He has owned it for 2 years, and believes he's the 4th owner. He has replaced the front tires (6.0-16), the rear tires (11.2-24) and rims, had a ROPS shipped from CA ($800), and completely rebuilt the steering box, with $500 in receipts for that. He changed the hydraulic oil last year. It's got two 65lb weights on each rear wheel, as he didn't refill the tires after replacing the corroded rims. It appearance is very good, some scratches, and a repaint some time ago, but very well done, and no signs of prior corrosion pits can be seen.

He wants $6000, and I think I'm going to pull the trigger, as my friends say. I'm not afraid of manual gears, or steering, especially steering that is newly rebuilt. I played with it this morning, and it's very nice, other than that old style two-lever loader control that has a little play in the levers. The PTO operation doesn't bother me, either.

Here's my question: what do you guys know about that 2cyl Sheeboom engine (it sounded good, and didn't vibrate as much as I imagined it would), and what do you know about the ball-type front axle mechanism? I notice it's like the old Jeeps, but I don't rememeber if that's a good thing or not.

This tractor will be our only tractor for the next 4 years, then we'll be looking at upgrading to something with 10 or so more PTO hp. We will be moving snow, a little fill/gravel/loam now and then, hauling wood, raking/scraping roads, and mowing less than an acre of grass and small whips to keep it from overgrowing. I'll say we won't put more than 50 hours on it yearly. We'll probably keep it after we upgrade, unless there's a good trade in or resale value. I am thinking about putting turfs on it and seeing if I can rig a belly mower under it, turning it into a garden tractor in the future. We may want to till with it, too.

I'd very much appreciate your advice, as I think I'm going to dive in within 24 hrs.

You are a braver man than I. I do think I'd could get used to the manual tranny (I prefer stick shift in a car), but I consider power steering a must have.

Did you drive it around with a load in the FEL? On soft ground? I had a manual steer garden tractor & it was a pita to muscle around. Does your property require a lot of tight manuvering?

Don't let me discourage you, just some food for thought.

I don't know if the price is good or not, but you could buy two and a half of them for what my "little" TC18 HST cost.

Looks like you;ve been doing plenty of research here and will make a good decision. I suppose I should encourage you to buy it and add one more blue member here. So much easier on the eyes.

Well, It's being delivered tommorow at 10:00. This guy is going to put a new seal kit in the left front bucket cylinder, because he has the kit and doesn't feel right about letting it go with a very small leak. When I mentioned finding a trailer, or renting one at U-Haul, he said he'd bring it over (15 miles). What a guy!

I drove it around his manure pile area (squishy), and even without a load in the bucket, it wanted its own way, but not too bad. I know enough to keep my thumbs out of the inside of the wheel, and not to horse it. I was thinking about swapping out the original wheel for one off a sailboat /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif. It'll do for six grand. Unless the price on the L2900DT drops a little. Maybe I'll have two.

I'll gladly join the blue dudes; looked at these slope nosed blue jobs with the beautiful curved loader arms last night on the way home. Guess I gotta go get more literature and start learning abou those. In four years, Lord willing, we'll be looking for new one. It'll be blue or orange, depending on value.

Hey,
My uncle has a 1700 that he uses for his wood business. He loves it. My brother-in-law has a 1900 (one step up)that has been literally pounded into the ground and it is still going. He replaced his rims too, as the previous owner had filled the tires. He also had a small hydraulic leak, but that has been fixed too. Other than that, it's been trouble free.I don't know alot about the Fords, but as long as it isn't smoking or leaking fluids all over the place, I think you will be happy with it. I really liked the the 1720's that were out a few years ago, but I didn't want to drive 2 hours up to Union farm Equipment.
Congrats on your "new" tractor!!!

By the way, I DON"T hate Kubotas (though I think they could have chosen a better color), but I sure am glad that you bought a FORD instead!!!

Hey IHC, I was going to cruise over to the vintage forum and 'fess up. It is a '79, so it's 23 years old.....almost vintage?

Thanks, guys, although you may regret it, because I love to ask questions.

IHC, please fill in that profile if you care to do so. I'm waiting for the thing to "land" before I add it to mine. Not superstitious, just practical. Then I'll post all the specs here, in case anyone wants them.

Haz & Banj, I can't believe I haven't checked your profiles until now- you guys are close. Now I have to go research what you're "driving".
