What is the biggest BH that I can run on this tractor? How much front ballast will I need?I' ve seen several on E-bay anywhere from 1000 lbs to 1300lbs operating weight.Thanks.

I have one of the Taylor-Way hoes you see on eBay on my 8N. It works great, but is pushing the edge of being a bit heavy. I also have a 1700. I would not suggest anything that big on the 1700. The frames on the little buggers are not that hefty. The wheel base is pretty short and there is not that much weight on the front. If you add too much ballast weight to the front you take the chance of messing up the frame. Mine frame was cracked and I had mounting bolts broke off in the block when I got mine (fix-er-upper.) Removing broken, rusty grade 8 bolts from an engine block is not fun. If you are going to put one on I'd suggest going smaller and lighter. Just my 2 cents. :)

I've run a Woods 7-1/2 foot hoe on a 1710. Weight is maybe 800 lb. It worked out quite well.

So I would be safe in the 800 -1000 lb range? How much front weight should I use?FEL would be good, I know, but don't have on that particular tractor.Thanks.

I've done a lot of very difficult...possibly abusive work with the Woods BH7500 on my 1715. It's got a full frame mount, not a 3pt hitch mount. I've broken the backhoe a couple of times but not the tracktor. Injuries to the backhoe include sheared lower main boom pin, total seperation of the lower boom cylinder pin mount from the main swivel housing, and rotation of the hyd pump due to the mounting tongue not being installed properly.
I've dug up tons of stumps that were really too much for this machine to handle and dug up tons and tons of NE 200 year old stone walls...dragging and moving rocks that had to be half the weight of the machine.
So far so good....seeing some wear on the BH pins but the tractor itself seems to handle it fine. The BH with a frame mount limits rear ground clearance a bit...and the bottom of the swivel or the bucket will often drag on dips and short inclines. Far as balance goes (all tires filled) I've had more instances where too much weight in the FEL was a problem rather than too much weight in the rear. Only once have I managed to actually pick up a stone larger enough with the BH to loft the front wheels (trapping the rock against the main boom).
Not sure how different the 1700 is compared to the 1715 though.
