I've got a Ford 1700 that we use to pull a feed wagon. I noticed recently that the oil indicator light was coming on at low rpm. I replaced the oil pump. Now it runs fine with plenty of pressure, except that I now have some blow by that I didn't have before. Does anyone know of anything I can put in the fuel/oil to free it up, or should I resign myself to rebuilding the engine. I suspect my daughter, who uses it most of the time, was not paying attention to the indicator light. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Mike, would you give a little more info on the blowby. Is it oil vapor/droplets coming out the breather cap or is it running/gushing oil out the breather? If it is the latter, like my Iseki, it may just be worn rockers/rocker shaft. The extra pressure from the new pump can push oil out the top via worn rockers, faster than it can drain back to the sump. Also, any blowby from the rings can pressurize the crankcase and slow the oil drain down even more.

"Blowby" generally indicates a top end problem. Rings. Replacing the oil pump might mean that the lower bearings are pretty worn.

But an engine can run for some time with some blowby. Since you mentioned rebuilding it, it sounds like the engine has some hours on it anyway.

And the sensor on the oil pressure light is generally set to 2-3-4 psi. Ususally you'll see that at idle only, but still not a good sign.

Good Luck,
Rob

The blowby is out of the crankcase breather. I suspect it's the rings as it takes longer to start without the glowplug. I had it apart for over a week trying to get the correct gaskets from the NH dealer (ended up making them), It probably got dry and they are now sticking.

If it is really blowby (past the rings) I have had good results with Restore Engine Treatment. Got me a few more years use on my old jeep and it was blowing blue smoke.

Thanks Barry, I'll try that before I resort to putting a bunch of Marvel Mystery Oil in it. I just used it to pull the manure spreader, and other than having a weak startup and a little blowing out the crankcase breather, it's running fine. I just want to keep it running so my daughter will leave my JD alone. I also don't want to go through the hassle of trying to get correct parts from my local NH dealer.
