Question: On my 1700 (2 wd), on the front axle, facing forward, is a grease fitting on each side (one each, left and right side).

I had one that was bad, and unscrewed it, and then tried to screw in a new one. However, it appears I have the wrong thread for this- I think I only had a SAE thread, and perhaps the grease fitting is metric.

I am thinking it is about a 10mm metric thread. I need to run up and buy some metric-if that is the correct thread.

Can anyone confirm what the thread is on this grease fitting?

I am only guessing since the tractor is made in Japan that all nuts and bolts are metric. Take the old one with you when you go to buy some new ones.

I would agree with ray, it is a japanese tractor, and more than likely it is metric. I own a 1700 as well and every bolt I have ever taken out has been metric. Have never changes any grease zerks, but im guessing they are metric. Good Luck, TB

By the way, cant you, post a picture of you 1700? Thanks!

So far I have not taken any bolt or nuts off my 1700 that was SAE. There is a number for the grease fitting on NH website but it is not more descriptive beyond it's name. I'll just take one a long to compare, call you local NH parts or just couple of metric ones after eyeballing the size.

Keep in mind that some grease fittings on Ford's are press in and not screw in.

Verify you have threads on the one that came out or in the hole it used to be in.

The answer is: Yes, it's a 10mm grease fitting.

I went to the local auto parts store. They had 6mm and 8mm fittings, but no 10mm fittings.

Then I went to the TSC (Tractor Supply Store).

They had 6mm and 8mm, but no individually packaged 10mm ones.

The only thing they had that included 10mm fittings was---a $40 metric package of 96 various size fittings.

So now I have the big pack.

Lesson learned- keep your eye out for small packages of 10mm fittings. And if you find them, buy a pack for later.

Thanks,

We'll take a note of it. I knew it was a bigger than 8 mm. If I remember the only 8mm I have seen on 1700 was injector drain bolt. I think harbor freight also sells an assortment and kind of cheap as well.
