Ford 1700
Hi everyone I have a ford 1700 that I use in comerical service for my sawmilling and custom farming operation. Recently while brush cutting I noticed that the pto shaft had some in/ out play, shortly after that the pto shaft was on the ground still attached to the brush hog. From looking at the diagram online it looks like when the seal was done by the previous owner they did not put a thrust washer/ bearing back onto the shaft allowing the shaft to slide in and out about half to 1 inch eventually popping off the c clip that holds the shaft into the tractor. Iv purchased new pto bearings and seal to fix it however the thrust washer / bearing is no where to be found and tractor supply says they can't get me a new one. Does any one have a pic of a pto shaft with a thrust bearing on it? I work in a pulp mill and was going to turn a new one in the machine shop but would like to see what I'm trying to turn out first. Also is this a part I would machine from brass or steel? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Mine are retained by a large C clip. Tractor supply would be the last place I'd go for parts like that.

I have a large c clip on there but the diagram lists a thrust washer looks like a little over a half inch of space that it takes up between the c clip and the main pto bearing to stop the shaft from moving. Fortunately my 1700 has had 1100 hrs with 0 breakdowns untill now so my local tractor dealer about 1km was my go to, who do you recommend for parts?

Why don't you measure the clearance and have a local machine shop turn you one. Pretty quick and simple job. Have them turn it from 660CA bronze stock as that will provide a good bearing surface. Have no idea where you are but I can do it in a few minutes here.

I'm on Vancouver island B.C. I should be able to turn one at work here, im on the weekend crew so I get acess to all the good toys. I'll try turning one out of some 660 any idea how thick I should make the walls? It looks like it shouldn't mater so I was thinking as thick as the inner race on the main pto bearing as it butts up to it when installed on the shaft. Thanks for the quick response! I figured I'd be waiting days lol

Sorry about the late update, I made one from 660ca but it started to mushroom after 25 hrs of heavy brush hogging, I built a new one from std steel rod and as it has no actual requirement to rotate it has been holding up well I sized it for a heat and freeze fit. I pulled it after 60 more hrs of hogging and tilling to check for any signs of wear and everything looks great. Thanks guys!

Next project will be a HP hydraulic / transmission filter i have sourced from a lindie forklift and a cooler as well as I don't like the temp of the trans after 8 hrs of work in + 30 degree C weather, currently I just cycle the loader up and down every 20 mins to get some cooler fluid back in there. I plan to use this machine comercial until I retire no matter how many rebuilds it needs. After that I'll keep it as my acerage machine

Is there anyway you could tell me the dimensions of the washer you fabricated? I recently purchased a Ford 1900 off of a farm auction which shares the same PTO system as your 1700, and like you, the previous owner lost the thrust washer and I can't find one anywhere on the net. it's also leaking hydraulic oil from the loose shaft. I'm going to try and first find an off the shelf washer with close to the same specs and if not, try and find someone to fabricate one. The machine shops around here don't generally take small jobs. Thanks!

Just in case anyone searches the internet and finds this post, I was able to buy an original thrust washer for my Ford 1900 tractor which is the same on the 1700 and other older models. If you make your own, the dimensions are for part number SBA399260660

35mm inside diameter
10mm wide
49mm outside diameter
