I would like to mount an electric fan on the radiator so I can reverse it to blow the debri off the screen. The water pump shaft sticks out too far. Is there a w/p with a short shaft or flange to mount a pulley on to give me clearance on this ford 1700 Shibaura LE 892 engine? A water pump company said I could cut the casting off in front of the pulley. Risky? Anybody been there done that?

Why couldn't you mount the electric fan on the front of the radiator and reverse it to suck the debris off the radiator screen.

Good idea, but the battery is mounted right in front of the radiator with the grill in front of it. Thanks for the reply. Oh, by the way, I just picked up a hard bound book at a yard sale called MUSCLE CAR CHRONICLE dated 2003. Nearly 1500 photos of Muscle cars from 1949 to 2003. An exciting read. Owned a 64 El Camino back when. Thanks again. Chet

Is it possible to turn the current fan around and bolt it back on? Heard of people doing that who pretty much just bush hog

We use the tractor for other things as well. Would hate to clog up the radiator core. Seems like the fan would pick up dust and stuff from the back side and push it forward. Thanks for trying. I appreciate the response. I am new to this forum. Chet

You will not be able to remove derbies by a smallish prop fan. it simply does not have the volume and static pressure developed. Why don't you let it be just the way it is and use an electric or gas powered leaf blower with much flow volume and pressure. leaf blower as needed does a much better job.

Thank you JC. I would like to de-debri it while running. (Not have to stop mowing) It has a 12 " fan now and I was thinking of getting an electric fan off a car and hooking up a toggle switch to it so I could simply reverse it from the drivers seat. You're thinking a 12" fan isn't large enough to blow the debri off?

Maybe I could use a larger fan and build a fan shroud to adapt it to the radiator.

Chet,

In my opinion the geometry is not right. which direction were you blowing with the fan. if you have it opposite of the main radiator fan then the fans discharge are opposite and fighting one another. If you blow in the direction of the radiator fan then you're blowing against the screen. any cleaning by air pressure from front requires the screen be taken out to be effective. A 12"dia fan that runs on 12 volt simply does not have the oomph (hp) needed to be effective. Shape of the nozzle and tip velocity is needed and a fan shroud can't do it. By the way , you do not want to rub precious cooling that the tractor needs by manipulating designed airflow geometry.

I was hoping to replace the stock fan with the electric fan.( between the engine and radiator.) I would only reverse it for a few moments with the toggle switch when necessary to (back flush) or blow forward through the radiator to blow the debri off the screen in front.
My original question was is there a replacement water pump for the 1700 with a short shaft or one with a flange to bolt a drive pulley onto to drive the water pump to leave room to mount an electric fan between the engine and the radiator.
Also some one suggested cutting off the w/p shaft casting in front of the pulley. I wonder if any one has cut off the front of a water pump shaft casting just ahead of the pulley to give room for an electric fan?
Is there a second opinion on how large an electric fan it would take to do what I want to do?

Chet,

There is no replacement water pump with shorter shaft, as the location of fan prop to shroud is very important for fan efficiency and direction of air flow. OEM shaft can be cut in front of the pulley but can't see if you have enough room there to put a fan and then how to mount it. potentially it can be mounted to the shroud but you'll be adding a lot of work, removing much reliability just to reverse blow the air to clean the filter and that is still questionable. tractor is noisy equipment and if your fan fail you would not know and engine quickly heat up unless you got one eye affixed to the temp gauge. Having a wire brush on hand, stopping the tractor , removing the screen and brushing it seems to be in the long run simplest and most effective.

jc,

edit: Your oem fan is not constant volume and provide varying air amount based on the engine rpm. Electrical motor needs to be variable speed or if constant it requires a stat to tun it off and on as stat requires it. This really add much complication to something that is entirely simple.
