A few weeks after buying my 1710, the pilot bearing gave out. Great timing by the seller... I thought I'd attach a few pictures of the bearing. Sorry for the blurry one.

Nice work Ted, thanks for sharing. Did you put a new clutch in it too?

JC,

Hi JC,

Nope, didn't put a new clutch in. There was about 0.030" left until the service limit so I figured I'd hold off. I did disassemble the clutch and clean it up...there was quite a bit of caked on dust and grime, but the frictions and faces looked pretty evenly worn. Also, when I bought the tractor, the pto clutch wouldn't disengage. It turned out that release point of the pto clutch was just way off, so nothing major. I do like the nice and big clutch inspection port in the bellhousing. I was able to get some feeler gauges in there to monitor the clutch wear as well as adjust the pto release screws.

Nice job. Yep , the pto was basically adjustment issue. The inspection (hand hole) on the transmission housing is such a great idea. I wished my Kubota had the same thing like my Ford 1700 does. It make it so easy to inspect the component. I made a gauge out of paper and kept cutting the strip down to match the thickness of clutch plate. I then used a caliper to measure the disk thickness. Was the first clutch on the left for transmission? What steps did you take to take pieces apart and put back in considering the pressure that diaphragm spring put on the whole assembly? did you put 3 C-clamps to push all together to take out the pivot pins? was the pilot bearing Sealed?

Thanks,
JC,

PS. welcome to TBN Blue :)

The clutch on the left is actually the pto clutch. I was surprised that the transmission clutch had friction pucks...wonder if it's oem or aftermarket.

Before loosening the 6 screws that hold the clutch assembly to the flywheel, I removed the 3 pivot pins. With the release levers free, I then backed out the 6 screws. I did use c clamps for re-assembling the clutch and that method worked too.

I did get a sealed bearing when swapping pilot bearing (you can barely see it in the pic).
