though there may be many automotive "shocks" that may bolt up just fine. A steering damper application would very likely be valved for a much slower response time.
You may not notice the missing function of a damper just now, but run one wheel into a tree stump at a glancing angle and then report back.
I've had the wheel of the Fordson (manual steering) jerked around so violently as to sprain a thumb, while working in the woods.
