Oil & Fuel Ford 1720 - Oil from vent hose

   / Ford 1720 - Oil from vent hose #11
My father recently purchased a 1720 for my son with 2000 hrs that looks like new. It also had a tremendous amount of oil dripping from the blowby tube. There was not much pressure or smoke coming from it but it would leave a stream of dripping oil everywhere it went. I finally called a dealer and told be there was a pip(product update) on the filter material on the fill tube. It cost $5 so I figured it was worth a shot before we tore into the engine. The new part was just some wire mesh. We pulled the valve cover off and replaced the original foam filter with this wire mesh. To my surprise it worked. He has drove it 5 hrs so far and has not had a drip of oil from the tube. Seems too good to be true but so far so good.

I meant to say the filter material on the blowby tube, not the fill tube

Thanks for that info re the filter material on the blowby tube...I'm going to check into it.

An update since I last posted:

1. I have put about 50 hours on the tractor between brush hogging, and moving dirt with the loader.
2. The amount of oil that vents from the hose has reduced significantly, and only occurs when the RPM is greater than 2k.

Overall, the tractor performs flawlessly...just gotta get to the root of the blowby.

Any update on this?

I have a 1999 1720 that is doing the same thing. I have had two mechanics, two New Holland Shops, and been consulting with New Holland directly and everyone is stumped.

I have good compression (390 psi) that is even across all of the cylinders and the blowby is within spec (4 inches). Mine is blowing oil out of the second and third push-rod journals from the front, which is right in front of the crankcase breather tube. We even re-directed the tube, put a curl in it and dropped it down on the other side of the motor. Nothing works.

At this point i am going to remove the valve cover, weld on a new port for the crankcase breather away from the two pushrods, install an aluminum baffle inside the valve cover, and re-route the breather hose.

Unless there is an easier solution?

Thanks in advance for the help.

My 1720 has over 2000 hours and does not drop any oil from the breather. It sounds like stuck or broken rings. Try Sea Foam in the oil

Appreciate the tip Gary and that is one of the first things I thought of. The problem is that compression is in the excellent range and there isn't excessive crankcase pressure. No smoke on startup or under load either.

I am leaning towards a combination of a faulty lifter and a bad oil dipstick that has me filling the crankcase too full.

I ended up taking my tractor to the New Holland dealer for them to have a look. They performed a compression test & said that the differential in compression between the cylinders was excessive, and said the most likely culprit is stuck rings. They wanted $$$ to tear it down & rebuild...I declined. On the side, the service manager recommended Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders (take out injectors & let the oil sit overnight). I haven't tried doing that just yet.

I continue to use the tractor, and the only time there is oil venting from the crankcase is when I have the RPMs at or near the max PTO rpm setting...in other words, I've come to live with it, at least for now. I'll eventually try the MMO trick in the cylinders and see if that works, although I'm not holding my breath.

The sea foam recommendation is something I'll try though...I use sea foam in motorcycles, and it does a good job of cleaning out the valve seats. Maybe it'll work a little magic in the diesel too.

I too thought that perhaps I have the wrong dipstick in my tractor, although it doesn't seem likely in my case...I am the second owner, and the person who had it before me was very particular about maintenance.
