Ford 1720 pops out of 2nd gear

Ford 1720 (1998) with shuttle will pop out of 2nd when motoring, but not under load. Slight hand pressure on shifter keeps it there.
What could the issue be and how to correct it?




IF we continue to get the precipitation we have, and it turns cold...we'll be digging out for the entire winter! Almost time to get the plow and counter weight on. I hope!

Typically, that is usually either a worn gear or a bent selector fork. In most transmissions, 2nd gear is the most often used which is why problems show up here first.

How about finding a parts manual for that series tractor and looking at the exploded parts picture? That would certainly show you what's in there and ought to help.
Anytheing from a 1300/1310/1320 to the 1520,1720,1920 and 2120 should look the same. I'll bet it's on-line or some dealer has a link.

Sixdogs has a point. The exploded view can often give you a way to figure out how to get in and look at things. It'll be best if you can find an inspection plate somewhere. That will let you see the transmission while it is still together. That makes it a touch easier to see what may be out of whack.
