Hi All,
After getting a quote of nearly $2400 from my local New Holland dealer (~$100 parts, 20-24 hours of labor!!) to replace the leaking timing cover gasket on my 1995 Ford 1720 I have decided to take the job on myself. I have tools and mechanical skills, (used to work as an auto mechanic) but the first challenge is that the tractor has a Sims cab and home-made ROPS bar that make it too tall to fit into my garage... I can remove the ROPS bar and let some air out of the tires, but I'm still not sure that will get it low enough... Still brainstorming ways to get it down and through the garage door without pulling the cab off... if anyone has ideas, I'd be pleased to hear them (tractor has AG tires and loaded rears... I think if it had turf tires it would be low enough...)
But the main jist of this post is to ask if anyone has done this or a similar job on a 1720 or other Ford/New Holland tractor equipped with the Shibaura N843 engine (series)? I have the Ford factory repair manual, and it looks like a serious PITA of a job... I've got the process in words and crummy 90's-vintage techmanual photo/drawings but in my experience, experience always has better information to pass on. Anyone have that experience? Hints? Tips?
I have already tried snugging the timing cover bolts, Lucas oil stop leak and, JB Weld It has a fairly steady and stubborn drip just behind the hydraulic pump. If this were purely a home utility tractor the leak is slow enough that I might let it slide and just keep adding oil, but I use it as a pasture maintenance machine on our sheep farm and pull a tedder and rake with it when haying, so I can't be dribbling oil all over everything :/
