Anyone know what thread pattern the hydraulic/tranny oil dipstick uses on a Ford 1900? The previous owner used a pipe fitting to replace it, and the threads do not match. Not even close actually, the fitting doesn't even thread in.

I have the old dipstick, which I can still use to check the fluid level, but the threads were damaged (which is why it was "replaced" with the pipe fitting. I'm thinking that if I can find a plug with matching threads I can attach the old dipstick to the plug. Or, if anyone knows where I might be able to purchase a new/used dipstick that would be great. I've been scouring the internet for awile with no luck.

Thanks

Eric

Eric,

There is no absolute need to have the dipstick part of the cap attached like oem, although less convenient to read the oil level. The key is to keep water from getting in from the fill hole. I don't know how they damaged the thread but it is 3/4" to 1" size. Don't know if it is metric or SAE for sure. I don't have a thread gauge large enough to measure but it is coarse thread. Why don't you got any hardware store and get two PVC plug, you can bring home and try. I suppose you do not want to re thread and make it the hole large with a larger plug. The transmission cover is cast aluminum. I would let the plastic plug to conform to metal thread the best you can and call it good. The thing is even if you are able to buy the OEM plug thread on the cover still bad needing re threding then it requires a bigger OEM plug that is not available. Just keep old dipstick to make a new one out of any metal wire with a pigtail so by accident it will not drop in the hole. you can keep the dipstick in your tool box if you have any on tractor.

Thanks for the info JC. I'll trying the PVC plug as you suggested. Water getting in through the fill hole is my concern to. I don't mind using a dipstick separate from the plug, so long as I know the hydraulic system is sealed. I'll let you all know how it works out.

I have a Ford 1900 and recently the dip-stick fell out of the plug cap and into the sump. I'm worried about what it may get into in there. I only hope it is ok in there, as getting it out would be major. I knew that it was about full to the line when I lost the dip stick, so I now use a piece of copper pipe which I scratched a line on to test the depth.

Don't run your tractor, start using a magnet to see if you can fish it out, taking the cover is not difficult. Can post pics if you need.

I assume the dipstick is not serviced anymore? Maybe an expandable rubber freeze plug will work.

Mine fell into there about 7 or 8 years ago. Nothing has happened. I bought a new dip stick from new holland
