Hi Guys,

I recently bought a 1981 Ford 1900. The power steering and three point hitch were not working; the seller said most likely a clogged screen. So I drained the hydraulic oil. It looked terrible. Milky light brown in color, it reminded me of Thanksgiving gravy. I pulled the hydraulic screen and it was certainly dirty/clogged. I cleaned it thoroughly with diesel fuel. Prior to reinstalling it, I took a rag and with a few fingers wiped inside the cavity where the screen goes. It is basically the area where the differential and other drive gear stuff is. I was able to mop up some very thick black oil-like substance. Is this indicative of some bigger problem? Is it possible that some engine oil is seeping into the crankcase? Before I reassemble everything and pour $150 worth of hydraulic fluid (type 134) into it, maybe I need to do some further work. Any suggestions? I hope the hydraulic pump isn't shot. I was told it was replaced 4 years ago.

I know it has been a while since I last posted, but I sure enjoy all the info here.

Thanks much.

I would dump in 5 gallons of diesel fuel and rock the tractor back and forth with out starting it to get it to slosh around good,
then dump that see what it looks like.

LouNy,
I took your advice and got the sludge out. I reinstalled the screen and bingo!! The hydraulics work perfectly. Thanks much.
