Hello all, I was running our trusty old 1900 wide open with the chipper on the back and after about an hour I noticed a patch of oil about 1 foot in diameter directly under the valve cover breather tube..not heavy oil on the ground but more like an aerosol spray. Pulled the valve cover and checked - all ok - so I'm guessing its either valves or rings but would like to hear what you all might think and if anyone has had one of these 1900 engines apart. Ive got the full shop manual and am pretty handy but Im always open to help and advice, thanks in advance, Rick

Oil out the breather is usually due to worn rings or even a hole in a piston.

If you put your hand by the breather, do you get a "puff puff puff"?, a steady stream of air? or what?

Could the oil be from the muffler or exhaust manifold and not the breather? It could just be what's lovingly referred to as "slobber". That happens when the engine is not worked hard enough to get hot and liquid diesel is pushed into the exhaust manifold/muffler and it comes out a black liquid that looks like engine oil.
