Shibaura SD2600
I just removed the final drive assembly on my Shibaura SD2600 to replace the oil seal on the axle. Before removing everything worked great. Upon reassembly the PTO is permanently engaged and the shift lever is frozen.

What did I do wrong? How do I fix without removing the final drive assembly again? Possible?

New Development - The PTO shift lever is in neutral and was during the repairs. I can move it in and out (out and in) just fine but it will not shift forward or backwards as if putting it in gear.

Your detent ball on the shifter assembly might be stuck.

Thanks for the response. Is there a detent ball on the PTO shift lever? I haven稚 seen one and if so any idea how to free it up?

At this point, the only I can think to do is unbolt the final drive assembky again, get the PTO shift lever freely moving again, and then remount. I had to have done something??????

Attached few pics I have on the detent mechanism fr my shifter mechanism. it is intended for he shifter rod to stay in place and not. couple of time my shifter stuck and all i had to do to losen it up to line up the ball and spring anf get it to work again. I know my PTO lever also has a detent Assembly.Either refer to transmission and pto assmebly sketch if you have and if not can look that up in NH website under part. I bet ya you have a detent mechanism for the PTO shifter. I wonderd if the ball was displaced during your repair.

You’re definitely pointing me in the right direction. I found info about the detent ball and spring in my shop manual and that I should have made sure the spring and ball were correctly aligned, prior to mounting the final drive assembly. I can’t believe I missed that step.

It looks as if I will likely need to remove the final drive assembly again to get to it. Not a big deal time wise and easy enough to do, but that gasket is $120.

can you take our the gasket gingerly? I have also used a bit of rtv over partially torn gasket and let it skin and then install. RTV blue has a lot of use to replace gaskets.

I appreciate all your help. It was the spring and detent ball. The final drive assembly came off nice and easy but the new gasket ripped in a couple spots. We just applied a good amount of gasket sealer when reassembling.

This is a picture of the shift rod in the axle center housing. The rod closest to the outside was sitting too far forward. I pulled it back to where the groove for the ball was visible and now it works like new!
