Ford 1910 4wd

Ok, well I'm continue to upgrade my Ford 1910 machine. So far, here's what I've done:
* Changed all fluids and filters.
* re-cored the radiator
* new thermostat and gasket
* rewired the lights
* adjusted the PTO clutch
* installed/fabbed a left foot pedal
* adjusted the breaks
* tested the glow plugs

Now, here's what's remaining:
* diagnose 4wd
* diagnose rear diff lock
* test compression, injectors, diesel fuel pump.
* and anything else that you recommend.

Next up is the 4wd. What I know is this: the lever operates okay, and it I can feel/hear it move the shifting forks and it appears to be working fine. The shaft to the front wheels doesn't engage and turns freely. The front wheels also turn freely, whether engaged or not.
I'm looking for a little assistance on where to start, and what some basic troubleshooting steps may be?

When I had 4wd on my 1700 it was the front ring and pinion gear. However sound like you have trouble in the main transmission.

There are splined couplers that slide on to each end of the drive shaft. If you are lucky on of these are bad. The other parts for the 4wd are very expensive and are getting harder to find. You can easily spend more on repairing the front axle than the tractor is worth.

ok. I'm going to drop the case and take a look. I'll keep you posted.
On a side note, the rest of the tranny operates just fine....barring the 4wd engage and the rear diff engage.

On my 1900 it is just as easy to unbolt the front axle and roll it forward to get the drive shaft out. If you take the drop box of at the trans to remove the drive shaft you have to drain all the oil and worry about a gasket.
