Ford 1910 Starter Solenoid trouble

Hi all,

My starter solenoid is acting goofy. When I engage the starter with the ignition switch the solenoid activates the starter just fine for about one revolution of the engine and then the solenoid returns to the disengage position while the starter continues to spin. I thought this would be physically impossible but it seems that the contactor inside the solenoid is maintaining electrical contact while the electromagnet core is losing current and allowing the plunger to return to the run position). Can anyone explain this to me? Am I missing something here? I have 2 solenoids purchased from the same aftermarket outfit (one was a warranty replacement for the other).

Also can anyone recommend a good brand / source for this solenoid? Does anyone know where to get a genuine Hitachi solenoid for this tractor?

It sounds like you have replaced the solenoid and this started after replacement?
Did you get the slot over the bendix shifter?

If that's what's happening the arc when the starter engages could be welding the contacts inside the solenoid together. You can't fix it, It is either defective or you need a heavier solenoid. Of course it's also possible you've got some shorted windings in the starter causing it to draw excess power. You could remove the starter and have it checked by a starter repair shop.

Yeah, I've rebuilt starters that did that. On mine it was a matter of getting the bendix or spring installed wrong.
