Looking at buying a Ford 1920, it is blowing black smoke out of the exhaust and the valve cover tube, the owner said it started all at once and also experienced a loss in power, he has it priced cheap, any ideas as what to llok for, sounds like a fuel problem, can't decide whether to jump into this project or not, any advice appreciated.

It probably started all at once when it was stuck up to it’s axles in mud. I believe this engine was over stressed.

Blowing black smoke out of the exhaust is usually serviceable by replacing the injector, but black smoke out of the valve covers indicates a serious problem. Black smoke from the valve covers could indicate broken rings.

You’re definitely looking at engine work in excess of $2000. If it was a cheap fix, he would have fixed it.

I'm thinking the same thing, havn't really decided to jump on this, it is a 4 wheel dr and he wants 1k for it, have no idea what it would cost t have the engine overhauled.

for 1k$, I would do it for the fun of it.

If the transmission is good, I would take the risk.

ditto.. 1k$ and you can repalce the engine entirely and still come out.

If you can not fix it you could part it out and and make a good proffit.

he should be able to fix it. me and a puddy put a new piston in a 1920 earlier this year.. cleaned up the aluminum off the cyl wall.. new bearigs and rings. machine is mowing again.. oh yeah.. fixed his water leak that caused it too! :) 700$ in parts and gaskets...

I think I'd buy it and then do a quick compression check after removing the injectors. That will probably tell you all you need to know. It could be something as simple as a burned valve and leakage around the stem, but I'd think those symptoms point to a broken ring or a hole in a piston.
