google "used compact tractor parts"
I am assumeing this tractot is new to you. Before you spend the money on a drive shaft make shure the rest of the 4x4 is functional. The parts for the front end are expensive and that is why when somthing in the front end would break some people would remove the driveshaft and use it as a 2wd.

Thanks for the reply. Have recently purchased the tractor, used it quite a bit, but had never tried the 4x4. I guess stupid me. Anyway, I am happy with the machine, but am sure I will be needing the front wheels to help out, especially when the snow comes. Thanks again for the help.

You can try M.M. Weaver and Son in Leola Pa and Weaver's Compact Tractor in Shippensburg Pa. I think they deal with salvage tractors and you might be able to order the part. Here is the link to Weaver Compact Tractor Salvage-

How do you know it needs repair? Maybe it is just not engaging at the lever. What are the reasons you came to the conclusion the 4 x 4 needs replaced or repaired?

You didn't take the hint the first time, so I will hit you a little harder with it.

As was pointed out previously, it is HIGHLY unlikely that the driveshaft is missing because it failed, or merely fell out. A 1920 4wd with a missing driveshaft is about 97% certain to have some other, far more expensive deficiency in the front axle or drop box. Just about the last thing I would do if I were you would be to buy a driveshaft (at any price) without ascertaining whether there are other problems, and if there are, what is involved in correcting them. Now if you are willing to commit to repairing whatever may be wrong, you can buy a driveshaft and the couplers and use them as a troubleshooting aid. But that purchase will quite likely be the beginning of the process, not the end.

I git you now....Since I have already admitted to being stupid, what would be your suggestion on checking for other problems, especially without the driveshaft? I have put maybe 50 hours on the tractor since I got it about two months ago, and have been happy with the performance so far. (p.s. I feel I got the machine at a good enough price that if I still have to put say a thousand in it, I would still be comfortable with that.) Not saying I want to spend another thou. thanks again for your help!

Blue,

As they say .. "you don't know what you don't know" and that's not stupid. My suggestion is that you go to NH website and download the breakdown of front wheel mechanism and try to study it. Even a cheap IT manual has a wealth of information. Without a drive shaft and front of the tractor securely supported on the two jack stands you should be able to check rotation of the bevel gears, drive shaft to center front differential. Look for binding, extra grinding and noises. The coupling of power to front drive shaft is usually done in the transmission. You can check a lot just without buying a drive shaft. See what components you're missing. At the end you can determine to justify cost of getting the FWA to work or not. Non of what I suggested costs you any money , it needs some sweat equity and at the end you learn a little something.

By the way , No one has ownership of knowledge.
