I have seen a very nice one-owner recent trade 1997 JD 1920, 4WD, shuttle shift, with FEL/bucket with 900 hours at a dealer...asking price $13,900

for about $2K more, I could buy a brand new Kubota L3400 with FEL/bucket...

any comments/advice??
Many thanks and best regards,

Try them bouth out. Normally I would go new and have the warranty but if you can get the NH price down some go for it as you can use the savings to buy some implements. The 1920 is a very solid tractor and the 12x12 tranny is a great transmission. I can't comment on the Kubota as I only messed around on a regular 3400 for a few minutes to unload a box blade for a friend.

If new vs. used doesn't make a difference then strongly compare dealers and see which dealer is more friendly and ask around to see who has the better reputation.

Good luck to you.

I don't have any exp with the kubota you mention.. hower I was the very satisfied owner of a NH 1920.. I regret trading it.. it was almost 'overpowered' for it's frame.. a deffinate plus. 4wd was nice.. a very sturdy and reliable tractor.. never let me down for a second..

I have really been pleased with the L3400 I got in the spring. After looking around for ages at used and then comparing all the local dealer offerings for new, I settled with the Kubota.

I only have 60hrs on this machine, but I already feel sorry for what it's been put through. Though 900 is not long compared with how much life is left there, I never realized just how much more peace of mind I'd have with a new machine. All the abuse is 100% my own fault.

In my part of the world, the depreciation is so slow that I suggest the new machine if that's the one you like best.

I second what Soundguy said about the 1920. When my father and I were looking for tractors back in 1988, we looked at Ford, Kubota, JD and Yanmar. Though Kubota had, and has, a stellar reputation, we bought the 1920 because it outweighed the same size Kubota by a substantial amount. If I remember right, I think it was around 200 lbs, maybe more.

Since we had no plans of ever mowing, the extra weight wasn't a concern. I equate tractors to stationary woodworking tools... you can't have too much weight or mass.

I have never regretted the purchase of the 1920. If the used tractor was well maintained, I would seriously consider it, and use the money you saved for implements.

In the long run, the best advice may be to go with what your gut tells you, it's usually right. Let us know what your decision is. Sorry I rambled.
