So last week I was working around the house with the tractor and noticed a pretty bad smell. I noticed it a little the previous time I ran the tractor, but didn't think much of it. This time I was working constant for a couple of hours and the smell got to be worse. I checked all around, but couldn't pin point where it was coming from. It smelled similar to a bad battery or something electrical, but different from anything that I have smelled before. Not sure where the smell fits in, but thought I mention it.
Fast forward to this past Saturday; I went out to the barn and turned the key and all I hear is click, click, click. Checked the battery and it read 13.2 volts. Disconnected the starter and turned the key and heard the expected "click". Reconnected the starter and the dash lights were dim, turned the key and a weak click was heard. So I decided I would take the starter off and take it to the local shop to test. They clamped the starter in a vice, connected a battery to the hot terminal and touched the ground to the vice. The starter immediately took off. The mechanic said he would give it a look over anyway and to come back in about an hour. So an hour later I go back and he says the starter was dragging a little on something internal and he fixed it at no charge. Clamped it back in the vice and it took off faster than it did the first time. Took the starter straight home, wired it up and the dash lights are dim. Disconnect the wire from the starter and the dash lights returned to normal. I have continuity from starter to ground. It all seems like a new starter is in order, but is there something else I can test to make sure the starter is the problem. And could the smell lead to an answer.
