Ford 3930 Steering Problems

I have a 1994 Ford 3930 diesel with 4000 hrs. I was having some steering problems ( hard to turn, unresponsive at times). So I changed everything Hydraulic pump, Steering motor, rebuilt the cylinder. Now it is harder to turn, like there is no assist at all from the hydraulics. Any thoughts on what it could be?

Lift your ftont wheels and feel id the vertical axles are loose and ghrease them ?

Did you bleed the air out of the system? Air compresses and fluid doesn't and it IS assisted steering, not power steering meaning that it helps your manual steering system work.

I'd do what DLT said and when finished, with the front end still off the ground, run the steering lock to lock till you get the air out.....keep an eye on the level of the fluid in the pump....even with the bottom of the fill hole.

Thanks for the suggestions. The vertical axles are moving and I bled the air out of the system. If the front wheels are off the ground it turns with some resistance, it makes no difference whether the engine is running or not it is the same. But if the tires are on the ground its a struggle to get them to move. Any suggestions?

Follow thin pipe from steeringpump to the first connection. Loosen that fitting....start engine and see if oil squirts out of pipe.If there is oil then mark a nice spot on that pipe .....remove pipe and braze a nipple on it .Get a stopplug for that nipple and a flexhydraulic hose with a 40 Mpa gauge. Drill a small hole throu the nipple into that pipe. Refit that pipe to the tractor and intall that flex hydraulichose and gauge.
Now start tractor and see if you get 10+ Mpa ? If not your pump needs replacing.
After all you only have to use the plug to plug that nipple.

And for the furure you already have a testport on that pipe !
