I may be getting out on a limb here but one of my brothers has a 4400 that has a generator instead of an alternator. The tach cable is connected to the generator, which was original equipment. Don't know when Ford started using alternators.

If the tractor is equipped with an alternator, the tach is driven from the engine oil pump drive which is located on the left side of the engine, approximately amidships, just above the oil pan flange. The switch to alternators began in 1972 so yours should still have a generator, in which case the drive is at the rear end of the generator.

Yep.. when most switch from a gen to an alt.. they cheap out and don't get an alt with a tach drive.. like a delco 10DN.. they get the cheap 10/12 SI model ( 35$.. etc.. )
