I just got a ford 4000 at a great deal. I just had starter rebuilt and now it is just spinning and not engaging flywheel. Looked at flywheel and it looked ok. Any reason it won't engage??? Help!
On a car I had, this is what would happen when the solenoid on the starter would not shove the ring gear over to engage the flywheel. They often are considered two separate components.
Thanks tcreeley, someone told me I may not have enough juice to turn the starter fast enough since the ring gear is "FORCED" back and forth centrifically and if it isn't spinning fast enough it won't engage. Not sure how to check that yet lol
You can pull and bench test using jumper cables. I like shopping locally-because the person who rebuilt it would see me tomorrow. The volt would have to be very low for this feature to not work. Maybe a little PB blaster on the end of the starter.
Thanks 2458n, yeah I did go local and he is coming by to check it out. The shaft on the end felt a little tight. Might try the PB blaster when I get home. That stuff works wonders
Wow...PB blaster seemed to do the trick!!! Thanks for the advice. Just a couple squirts. Then worked the gear back and forth. Now it's working fine thanks again
