I just got my "new" tractor. After countless times of coming to TBN for advice (thanks soundguy) my 8n is running well enough to sell. So I bought a Ford 4000 3cyl diesel (still trying to locate the serial to determine year) This has the generator with the Tachometer screwing in to the gearbox on the back. I unhooked the cable from the generator and spun it by hand and got the tach gauge to move, so I know that the mechanics in the cluster are good and there is not an internal break in the cable. I started the tractor and I can see the gearbox on the back of the generator spin, so no issue there either. Seems like i am missing a collar or a shaft of some kind that slips over the metal on the tach cable and that snugs up in the gearbox?
On a seperate note. The fuel and temp gauges also do not work. I pulled the cluster and found a mouse nest behind the panel. Cleared that all out and tested the power going to each side of the cluster (one for each gauge i think) and got good readings. Also checked the ground to the cluster and it read good as well. Thoughts?
