OK, got it torn down. The head gasket was in pieces...head looks OK. So, I guess that was the problem.

Toughest part of the whole thing was getting out the bolts that connect the battery support to the back of the head. There is no room in between the gas tank and the bracket. I don't know who thought that was a good idea. Anyone have any secrets as to how to get those in and out?

Also, I have a service manual for the tractor and also an IT Shop Manual from Tractor Supply. They have different procedures for torqueing the head bolts. Which one should I follow?

Personally I would run the head by a shop and have it checked out since it is off.

replace core plug back there too...
