Ford 455C
I"m pretty certain that I have a leak in the Hydraulic oil cooler so I have to drain the system. I have a book for a Ford 455 (not 455C) and it says to drain the system be removing the anti -siphon valve on the filter body.. I think the filter is on the rt. side (passenger ha) of the tractor ? and is well exposed, but the book pic looks different from mine and looks like a screw-off filter body (instead of a bolted on unit as illustrated in the book). Is what I believe to be the filter location correct?---and I don't see the anti-siphon valve as in the pic. If I screw off the filter body--will I have a flood of fluid? I'm catching the fluid in a pan---but think it will be too dirty to reuse after running all over the machine first. I'm actively looking for a new cooler--and would like to drain the system asap --and save as much fluid a$ po$$ible. I use the hoe to plow out my driveways when the snow is too deep for the atv to handle. Any experienced advice surely appreciated--Thanks, Cary

Cary, I've got quite a few manuals but none on the 455C. My 555A has the bolt on filter unit, outside right frame rail, just in front of rear tire.

If you loosen the filter assembly so it drains you will empty the reservoir tank. My Manual says my hydraulic fluid capacity is 96 qts (24 gallons). I'm sure that includes all the hoses and cylinders. If your tank is full you'll surely get 10 gallon at the filter. Will be messy at a minimum.

Here's a pic of my filter setup. The anti-siphon valve assembly is fastened to the bottom of the filter housing just rearward of where the tank hose fastens. You can barely see it in this pic.

Hi Ovrszd-- Thanks for your reply and pic. My Filter unit looks little like your pick--but it is in about the same location on the tractor as yours. I did make a check of the fluid level in the tank and was glad that I'd lost most of it plowing two days ago. It was 3 degrees f. last night here in way upstate NY--but decided to tackle it today anyway. At least I'd gotten the machine in the unheated workshop once I'd noticed the pink fluid all over the snow the other day.
I was able to knock off (turn) the filter casing with a hammer and chisel. The anti- siphon valve was apparent in the center of the filter body. I held it open while the fluid dribbled out with a screwdriver--but decided I didn't want to do that for 5-10 hrs --and was able with a c-clamp and screw driver to wedge it open. The cooler is now loosened up and only held on with the big-stiff hoses. I can peak behind the cooler and glimpse the tractor radiator. It is incredibly plastered with all kinds of organic debris. So that's great that I'll be able to clean that up prior to installing a new hydraulic system cooler. I had a tough time locating one online (Product No: E8NNF830AC) but now it seems like I can get one for 600 - $700.
