Ford 4610 idling at 2000 rpm

I have a 1985 ford 4610 that hasn’t been run much over the last year or two. I was using it today and i reved it up to about 2000 rpm and now it is stuck there. It will not idle down. I pulled the fuel shut off lever after a couple minutes to kill the engine. The throttle linkage is moving properly on the injection pump. If I partially pull out the fuel shut off lever like i was going to kill the engine and i can get it to idle.

What could it be? I am thinking the rack or governer is stuck??? Is there a way to check or clean it without removing the whole injection pump? Or if I remove it how hard is it to set the timing again?

I don’t have a repair manual for it either... I’m looking for one online now...

Is it the CAV pump?? IF SO, the metering valve is probably sticking.??
Run/drain the fuel level in the tank & add some injector cleaner.. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS.!!!
Keep working the mv back & forth w/ the shut off lever.. it'll free up..
It could be worse.. it coulda stuck in the shut off position..

Got it fixed. You were correct. Diesel was nasty and full of rust/gunk. Some atf and fresh fuel fixed it

I keep Power Services grey label in my fuel. Usage directions on the container, priced right, commonly sold at most any parts store. Well worth the time and money to add it to your fuel. Wink. If you live in cold climates then their white label takes care of your stored fuel.

Thanks for the info. I started running the power service in my fuel today when i filled it up. I had never used it before. Also i run 2 stroke oil in my diesel and i have done that for years.

Pull up P.S. home page and look at "About US". Helps separate it from the slang phrase "Snake Oil".
