I am looking at purchasing a 1995 ford 4630 4wd with a 7310 loader. The issue is that it has a oil leak on side between the transmission and rear housing. Since it has to be split at this point and I have never done this before, is it a huge project? Does it just split and separate or does it have some shafts running between which requires a lot of work and expense? If it is to involved I may not want to buy or the price would need to be reduced significantly. Anyone ever done this split?

Thanks,
Strayjen

To the forum from Northwest Alabama. Never worked on a Ford before so can't be any help there.

Not a lot of work to split. The PTO shafts and transmission output shafts come out of the transmission. It does just split and joining takes a little work getting the shafts lined up and started, but not bad. There is a metal buckle-up gasket that seals the two housings. A bottle jack on the transmission and a nice floor jack on the rear end housing makes splitting and assembly nice. The loader requires some jackstands.
I have found on some of these that the bolts loosen on the side and bottom of the joint. You can get lucky just tightening them, but don't count on it.

Before reassembling make sure the PTO drive hub is fully engaged in all the friction discs in the clutch drum and the tabbed thrust washer is in its proper place. Disc damage will occur if the hub is out of position. If the PTO shaft partially engages the drive hub then you roll the tractor apart as much as 1/4", roll it all the way clear and recheck the clutch hub.

Thanks for the input, I will look a little closer at the tractor but it gives me some kind of a base line so that I don't just buy a lot of work and expense. I would wait until I got it home to try tightening the bolts. This gives a little leverage on price.

Thanks for the added caution RickB. Do you know if it would be better to have the PTO engaged or disengaged to split the tractor and leave that way until reassembly? Just wondering if one position or the other would hold all the PTO discs etc. in place while the tractor is split?

Good advice on the PTO clutch, Rick B.
Engage or disengaging the PTO won't matter as it is a hydraulic clutch pack that does not change without hydraulic pressure. The plates are loosely sliding and line up with the hub splines while turning the hub and pushing in place.
