I recently inherited a 1969 Ford 5000 tractor. It had some issues at the time, but is running well now. Recently I replaced the Generator with an Alternator, and all the wiring, but I have run into a snag. The instrument panel is shot and judging by the amount of rust for some time. That's no big deal, and can be replaced with an aftermarket assembly. My question is really about the Tachometer. My cable has been cut some time ago, but it would appear through online research that the tach was drive from my non-existent generator, which is now an alternator. I would like it to function, so does anyone know how to get a functioning tach with a changing system that was converted to an alternator?

There is some one who makes an alternator with a tach drive on the back of it also I think there is a tach drive you can get to drive off the camshaft under the oil filter

yup.. spendy tach drive on back of alt.. or.. if you can get the aux OP drive and a new cluster..

is this tractor a gas or diesel?

and by 69.. is it a 256 with knock out core plugs.. or a 233 with screw in. should be a 256..

Thanks. It is a diesel. I believe a 4 cylinder. Haven't had to much engine work on it so forgive my ignorance. Not sure about the core plugs. By this do you mean freeze plugs in the side of the block? Unfortunately, I replaced the alternator already before understanding the tachometer and engine hours gauges and how they work. All that works on the gauge set are gauge illumination lights, so I will replace the gauge panel this summer. Trying to understand if the tach drive better I went to AC Delco website to see if this is something that can be purchased and bolted on to my existing 1 wire alternator. If not then I might have to buy a new alternator, understand to aux OP drive and new cluster information. Right now the alternator seems easiest.

You can use electronic tachs that get the signal from the alternator. But you need a W tap on the alt which usually requires a trip to a shop that rebuilds them, and then have to do some figuring with pulley sizes.

Or you can get the spendy alternator with tach drive.

Unfortunately, there is NO cheap solution to the issue if you want the tach with a diesel and converted.

ditto that. cheap option is to keep a genny and oem tach setup. I've never paid mor ethan 80$ for a genny rebuild.

tpo the op. if it's a 5000 it's a 4 cyl.. :)
