Ford 5000 misfire

My tractor got ran out of fuel. It started misfiring so of course I primed it back up got it running again started to misfire. We'll we came to the conclusion the timing was a little high. So we set it back to 19 ran even worse. So I set on 24 zero misfiring runs strong as ever and cleaned up the smoke from turning the pump up about half a turn. Why would advancing the timing to 24 make it run so good?

Wear in the timing gears and maybe the IP camshaft make it fire later than the setting indicates.

Assuming that 19 degrees is correct for normal fueling, with more fuel, the ignition delay may be longer thus requiring more advance.
