Ford 5000 transmission

Hello ... I'm a new member and have a question for you..
I have a 1970;s ford 5000 Diesel 8 speed manual transmission.
Last spring, one morning had no gears at all with no prior warning(s)
Long story short... Bob replace what he called the the input shaft (gear) with a new one
He said he test drove it and was fine.
When I used it for the first time on Low 3 and reverse there is a high pitch winning noise
He said it's OK and will go away in time.
Only used it for about 2 hours since the repair and noise is still there
He says need more hours.
I feel skeptical but perhaps I should give it time and see how his word pans out.
Appreciate your thoughts
Hope someone out in "Tractor Land" can comment and put my mind at ease

Sorry, I wish I could help but I don't know enough about the workings of the 5000 transmission. I wouldn't think an input gear would affect 3rd and reverse unless he did more than just the input gear. Maybe put in a used gear or a mis-matched gear.

I'm following with interest. I hope you resolve the problem.

we were told he put in a new input shaft which cost over $700.00 ..
I will continue to search for an answer and let you know what we find.

That's a tough tranny, did he put a different gear lube in it, perhaps UTC, instead of 80 w90, if he did, you may hear more noise.

Most non dp 5000 had sepere trans sump. Late 5000 and dp models had setup like 5600 and common sump.

we put in the proper lube.. as we purchased it from Robert's Farm Equipment...
Ron did say he replaced the oil with the same oil..
the shaft that was replace was the Main input shaft... I should have mentioned that earlier.. sorry

Utf or gear oil would be proper lube, utf might be noisier, if used to heavy gear oil.

No other strange noises in other gears?

I would add that matching a new gear against a worn gear will cause whine. That whine will ultimately go away when the two gears grind each other into submission. Not a perfect situation. But might be the most cost effective situation. Otherwise the matching gear would have to be replaced as well. Then, if one of those gears slides to match with a third gear to select a certain speed, that gear would have to be replaced as well. I'm guessing your mechanic had good intentions and was trying to save you money. Whether or not he succeeded will only be told with time.

If the transmission shifts fine and doesn't jump outta gear or something stupid like that, I'd use it with faith.

the tranny does shift fine. no problems there just the winning sound.
sounds like that is what Rob did. too bad he didn't explain the situation to us..
other than saying it should go away in time..

And maybe change that oil after 20 hours or so. Would be interesting to drain it through some cheesecloth to look for metal shavings...
